Because of their high abrasion resistance and tear propagation resistance, casting elastomers based on polyurethanes are frequently used as roller covers in high-speed, highly stressed machine elements such as those employed in paper manufacture and processing. To reproduce these stresses under simulated service conditions, the Physical Testing department of the Polyurethanes Business Unit has built a number of roller test stands for carrying out life expectancy tests on polyurethane-coated rollers as a function of the peripheral speed, contact pressure etc.
| The drum of the roller test stand shown in the picture can be operated at peripheral speeds of 3 – 60 km/h. It has a maximum out-of-roundness of ± 0.03 mm. A pressure of up to 100 kN can be applied to the polyurethane-coated roller, either power-controlled or distance-controlled. The surface temperature and core temperature of the polyurethane coating can be measured continuously. |
