VisionWorks – Mission statement for a successful future

Making visions a reality

At the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the "Senso" concept car from Rinspeed Design, a leading supplier of exclusive prototypes, was an unprecedented public attraction.

VisionWorks – Mission statement for a successful future
Bayer MaterialScience is proud to have played its part in turning visions into reality for the next generation of automobiles.
The Senso is unique because it "senses" and adapts to the driver. For example, a 3D moldable electroluminescent film developed by Bayer MaterialScience and Swiss electronics specialist Lumitec generates glare-free interior lighting based on measured biometric data. The light relaxes the driver, encouraging him to drive more safely.
However, the development of the Rinspeed Senso is just one example among many of how Bayer MaterialScience puts its mission statement, "VisionWorks," into action. The mission statement is an interpretation of the company name: "Material" stands for the products BMS develops and produces, and "Science" stands for the know-how and experience of its employees, who offer customers innovative and competitive products and new solutions. With their expertise, they develop and manufacture high-quality materials for their customers’ market-ready applications. In other words, they turn visions into reality. VisionWorks is both our guiding principle and our motivation for taking the visions of our customers and moving them into the realm of possibility.
Visions and ideas are the well-spring of innovation; they mark the beginning of the innovative process.
The Board of Management of Bayer MaterialScience has included innovation among its three primary targets, alongside efficiency and growth. The company already generates some 20 percent of sales with products that are less than five years old, and it has roughly 2,000 projects in the innovation pipeline. Bayer MaterialScience wants to further strengthen its innovative capacity in the future, with the aim of developing new growth markets. Between 2004 and 2006, it will therefore invest EUR 900 million in research and development, including collaborative projects with customers.
"A dynamic and open culture that promotes innovation, combined with efficient processes and a coordinated strategy, is the basis for sustainable growth," noted Dr. Hagen Noerenberg, Board Chairman of Bayer MaterialScience, in his invitation to the "VisionWorks InnovationForum" in December 2004. At the event, project managers from all parts of the organization presented impressive, innovative products, applications and processes.
